Have you ever missed a workout?
Almost all of us have.
Hell, even me, Mr. Fitness in the flesh, has been guilty of missing a workout here and there.
Missing one or two workouts won’t kill your gains, though.
It’s when you start missing lots of workouts that you begin to get into trouble.
You begin to slowly slip back into inactivity.
You may start gaining back weight, and even begin to lose some your precious muscle and strength.
Not good. Not good at all!
So, how can we avoid this tragic fate and consistently workout like the true badasses we are?
Well, we need to take heed of the #1 factor needed to workout consistently:
Convenience is the #1 factor for consistency, and remember that consistent effectiveness is how you GET RESULTS!
If something’s CONVENIENT, your about 50% of the way to actually DOING it.
Look, we’re all busy, tired, stressed, and even sometimes just damn right lazy.
This means that we’re just not going to go out of our way to workout.
In order to make this thing part of your lifestyle, which it needs to be in order to work, it needs to be…
…IN THE WAY.
It has to be so much IN THE WAY that you trip over your equipment each time you walk past it, so you can’t make excuses!
Now, I get it.
That gym on the other side of town sure is nice and shiny, and the salesperson really sold you on the muscular arms, rippling abs, and big, strong legs you’ll achieve by using all of their super-advanced equipment.
But are you really going to:
Gather up the willpower.
Get dressed in your gym gear.
Pack your gym bag.
Get in the car make the 30 minute drive.
Walk in, exchange pleasantries, check in, lock up your stuff, and get in a warmup.
Have a chat with that pain-in-the-ass guy always asking for advice on how to train lats.
Finally get into the meat of your workout.
After your workout is done, hit a cooldown or some cardio.
Grab your things from the locker room.
And then finally make the 30 minute drive home?
This is likely a two to three hour EVENT, just for one workout!
And don’t forget, you have to do this 3-5 times a week, for years, to maintain consistency and see results!
This is a HUGE reason people sign up for a gym membership in January, after making grandiose new year’s resolutions, just to fall off in February (or sooner!).
I’m not saying all this to be a Negative Ned.
But what I am saying is that we need…
Get some cheap dumbbells, a barbell and some plates, kettlebells, a bench, a rack, some bands, or anything else that provides resistance, and put all of it in a convenient location, in the way!
These are great convenient options for cardio, as mostly everyone has a TV. You can also try to find videos on Youtube and do them from your phone or laptop.
If the weather permits, outdoor cardio is the absolute best form of cardio while being super convenient, as you can start right when you leave your door. Walking, running, cycling, hills, sprints, rollerblading, skateboarding, boogie boarding etc. all get you moving and get your heart pumping. They also can even help you get out in and connect with nature.
Get a treadmill, bike, or rower.
Also great convenient options for cardio, and can be great options when other forms of cardio aren’t available.
Go to a gym that’s CLOSE to you.
It needs to be less than a 15 minute drive (with congestion and traffic), less than a 10 minute walk or bike ride, or less than 20 minutes on public transportation.
Also (and these are some very important also’s): You have to feel comfortable in the gym, and it needs to have an atmosphere conducive to kicking ass and taking a few names. If it’s too crowded, If you feel at all self-conscious, if you feel like you don’t belong, or if you feel that it’s becoming a chore, It will not work!
A Quick Story
I recently bought a new camera.
It’s pretty nice, and I really wanted it to take the pictures for this website to a whole other level.
I was going to be the Herb Ritts of blogging, with beautiful and colorful photos gracing every post.
Do you know how many picture on this website came from that camera?
2 or 3…
Out of hundreds of pictures.
Because it’s not CONVENIENT.
I realized after I bought it that I’m not going to lug this camera around everywhere to JUST to take pictures.
It’s a pain in the ass!
Not when there’s a camera on something that’s already on me, MY PHONE!
A cell phone camera is a thousand times more convenient!
Just whip it out, and BOOM! Snap your picture.
I also happen to find lots of pictures online in the public domain that are pretty awesome.
So I now have an expensive camera that serves as decor.
The point is that it must be convenient, or you’re just not gonna do it.
Building muscle, losing fat, and getting into shape needs to be like the cell phone camera above:
Easy to do.
Quick and fast.
Not require too much thinking and planning.
And above all,
Now, I’m not saying we don’t need to work our asses off to get fit.
I’m saying the OPPOSITE, that we need to make working our asses off easy!
Let me reiterate…
We still need hardcore workouts to make progress, my point is that we need to make it EASY to get in those hardcore workouts!
What Else Can We Apply This To?
Well, a lot of things, but two stand out to me:
Nutrition. You’re not going to cook meals every day to take on the go if you’re just not into cooking, can’t cook, or don’t have time to cook. Solution? Find easy on the go meals that are solid. Microwave frozen veggies. Use quick oats. Find fast healthy options at restaurants you’ve researched before-hand.
Sidenote: Try to stay away from “convenience” stores, as they are usually packed with crap, or “convenience” foods, heavily processed foods that are very easy to eat and that prey upon our busy lifestyles.
Work. If I had to go to an office 30 minutes away to write, I would write inconsistently. Since I have one of those handy-dandy laptop computer thingies that goes anywhere, I have no excuses not to open it up, anywhere I am, and put the pen to paper, so to speak. Moral of the story? Make your life easier and more accessible with technology. Delegate. Kick out time wasters and insignificant things (like checking and sending email, texting, social media, and/or mindless organizing).
Now I know some tough guys might be saying this right about now:
lol what? Convenience is for losers. If you’re hardcore you’ll do it regardless!
Sure there, Rocky.
If your life is the gym, you have no kids, you’re not trying to run a business, you don’t have a job (or your job is the gym), you’re not in school, and/or you just don’t have anything else going on, by all means join that hardcore gym across town and beast out, I ain’t mad at ya!
But for most of us, we want to be fit, healthy, ripped, and muscular, BUT WE ALSO have a million other things going on that are just as important and that need to get done.
So we need to find ways to get things done as EFFECTIVE as possible.
Make life easier by doing things SMARTER.
Place things that are important to you IN THE WAY, and make them accessible, easy, quick and fast, and not require too much thought or planning.
Make these things just something you do, and you’ll start to see BIG changes with the effective consistency you’ve built.
